Our Story
Building this nation
since 1946.
From a garage in Hamilton to New Zealand's leading construction company.
In 1946, Fred Hawkins and two mates sat in his garage and turned their passion into a business. One that would become New Zealand's foremost construction company, shaping our skyline.
The Hawkins story centres on its people — some reaching fifty years of service — and is underpinned by a Kiwi can-do attitude that has defined us since day one.
In 1951 the Hamilton-based company listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange, growing an ever-widening client and regional base. By 1979 Hawkins had regional offices in the Central North Island, Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch — all of which still exist today.
In 2017, Hawkins became part of the Downer family, allowing us to continue growing and helping New Zealand communities thrive. From schools and banks to hospitals, airports, and apartments — our projects span the length of Aotearoa.
